"We left home at 6 pm one evening. It was very dark, and we walked through the desert until the next morning. We hid during the day and we were very frightened that we would be recognized and killed. Then we crossed the mountains. It took us a whole day on foot. On the other side of the mountains we rented a bus to take us further. The whole family was in the bus. We went with no light on the bus. Two men walked in front of the bus to search for bombs and mines that could explode. That would kill all of us. It was better just to lose two people than the whole family."
